Roullete (pronounced rool-ette) is one of the most popular casino games in the world. It’s simple to learn, yet offers a surprising level of depth for serious betters. Its popularity stems from its glamour and mystery, and the right strategy can reap high rewards.
The game involves a small ball spinning around a numbered wheel. Players place bets on either a single number, various groupings of numbers, whether the number is red or black, or if it’s odd or even. When the wheel stops spinning, and the ball drops into a pocket that marks a specific number, the player wins.
Before a spin of the roulette wheel, players make their bets by purchasing colored chips from a dealer (known as a croupier). Each player will be assigned a unique color to identify him or her on the table. The croupier will then ask each player what denomination they would like to designate for each chip.
Once the bets are placed, the croupier throws a ball onto the wheel. The wheel has thirty-six compartments that are numbered nonconsecutively from 1 to 36. Two additional compartments, painted green on European wheels and red on American ones, carry the signs 0 and 00.
If the winning number is in one of the first dozen (or dozens) on the layout, the player receives an even money payout (1-1), while if it’s in the second or third, the bet pays out 2 to 1. The Line Bet/Six-Number Bet/Sixline Bet (also known as cheval in French) has a similar payoff, but requires placing your chip(s) to straddle the line between two rows. The house edge for this bet is 17-1.
